DHSBNHS Sigma Mu Epsilon Math and Science Club celebrates 60 years

For six decades, Sigma Mu Epsilon Science Club has stood as a beacon of excellence, curiosity, and leadership. On February 25, Doña Hortencia Salas Benedicto National High School (DHSBNHS) celebrated its 60th Founding Anniversary and Initiation Rites, to honor the past and ignite the flame of discovery for the future.

The Sigma Mu Epsilon Initiation Rites are more than just a tradition; they symbolize the transformation of neophytes into full-fledged members of a legacy built on excellence, perseverance, and unity.

Blindfolded, they took their first steps into the unknown—guided not by sight but by trust, determination, and the unwavering support of their fellow SME members. The exercises tested not just their physical endurance but their commitment to the ideals of the organization.

And then, like a rite of passage marking a new beginning, the Bureau of Fire Protection showered them with water, washing away doubts, exhaustion, and fear. It was a moment of renewal—an exhilarating reminder that they had conquered the challenge, that they were now part of something greater than themselves.

The event opened with a dynamic opening salvo, setting the stage for an afternoon of reflection, inspiration, and unity. As guests, members, and alumni made their way into the venue, there was a sense of excitement in the air—an unspoken understanding that this was more than just a ceremony; it was a continuation of a legacy.

SME adviser, Melvin Medina, warmly welcomed everyone, reminding of the club’s mission to foster scientific inquiry and leadership. This was followed by meaningful messages from Rochelle Pastias and Dr. Erle Arbado, emphasizing the value of science education, camaraderie, and the enduring impact of SME.

The heart of the event was the video presentation of past SME activities that showcased the journey of Epsilonians through time, how SME evolved, how traditions have been preserved, and how each tribe and per batch left its mark.

The presence of SME pioneers added depth to the celebration, with Susan Estrella (SME Pioneering Member, 1965) sharing heartfelt reflections from the past, bringing a sense of nostalgia and pride.

Adding more inspiration to the evening, Dorle Pillado-Baga (Former Supreme Ranee, 1983-1984) encouraged the young members to embrace leadership, while Marvin Elray Paclibar (Supreme Rajah, 2009-2010) shared powerful words of wisdom, reminding all that leadership is about service, dedication, and the willingness to create meaningful change.

In a heartfelt message, STE PTA President Amy Marabayles expressed deep admiration for the dedication and passion displayed by the club. Recognizing the challenges and triumphs that come with leading an esteemed organization like SME, the STE president highlighted the importance of resilience, teamwork, and lifelong learning. She also reaffirmed unwavering support for the initiatives of SME, emphasizing the vital role it plays in shaping young minds to become future scientists, innovators, and leaders. With a strong foundation and a shared vision, Sigma Mu Epsilon stands poised for greater heights, ready to embrace the future with the same passion that has defined it for the past 60 years.

Another momentous part of the event was the turnover of duties and responsibilities. Outgoing Supreme Rajah John Bryle Amable and Supreme RaneeMarie Jamiela Carriedo delivered a message of challenge, urging the next generation of SME leaders to uphold the club’s values and continue pushing boundaries. Their successors, Earl Gabriel Miguel (Junior Rajah) and Xianadlyx Ylagan (Junior Ranee), then took the stage to accept the challenge, signifying a new era for SME.

The night was brought to a solemn and symbolic close where the highlight of the program was the candle lighting ceremony—a tribute to all past, present, and future SME members. As the song “If We Hold on Together, Tell the World of His Love” and the finale “At the Beginning” played in the background, candles illuminated the activity floor where the figure of the famous SME grip, reminding everyone that though times may change, the light of SME will always shine.

The success of this event would not have been possible without the unwavering support of parents, STE PTA President Amy Marabayles and Officers, SME advisers, science teachers, School Head, Assistant Schools Division Superintendent Dr. Jen-Ann Rosal, Schools Division Superintendent Dr. Ermi Miranda, speakers, alumni, sponsors, and every individual who contributed to the milestone celebration.*
