The city government of Bacolod has started to distribute food packs to public transport drivers and the poorest of the poor yesterday while the city is under Modified Enhanced Community Quarantine (MECQ) status until Sept. 30.

Pacita Tero, head of the Department of Social Services and Development (DSSD), said the distribution of food packs started in numbered barangays in the city which have a list of all jeepney, trisikad, tricycle, and taxi drivers, including the names of their constituents who do not have stable sources of income.

Tero said Mayor Evelio Leonardia has instructed them to prioritize the drivers and the low income group. The distribution was facilitated by the barangay captains.

The city has enough stocks left that can provide for about 43,000 families, who are earning below P10,000 combined, because some are beneficiaries of the Pantawid program, unconditional cash transfer, and social pension, she said.

The mayor has instructed them to reserve the food packs left because they do not know how long the pandemic will last. Each food pack contains seven kilos of rice, five cans of sardines, and five packs of noodles, Tero said.

They continue to hold meetings to plan out strategies because they also have to check the available sources of fund. They hope to respond immediately to the needs of the people, she said.

Tero said the city is not remiss in its responsibility to the people. They are very sensitive to the situation of their constituents.*
