Drug suspect resists arrest, accidentally shot in face

• THERESA MAE DULMAN

A drug operation by the Bacolod City Police Office turned violent early Friday morning, when a drug suspect was accidentally shot in the face after resisting arrest and attempting to seize a police officer’s service firearm.

The incident occurred at approximately 7:25 a.m. in Purok Langis, Barangay Banago, Bacolod City, during an operation led by the Police Station 3.

The police team was in the area to serve an unrelated warrant when they chanced upon three individuals identified as 49-year-old alias ‘Joe,’ a 34-year-old alias ‘Joshua,’ and one male minor, engaged in an illegal drug transaction.

According to police, upon noticing the approaching officers, alias ‘Joe’ immediately attempted to dispose of an item by throwing it away but the situation escalated when one of them noticed a Cal. 38 revolver firearm tucked in the suspect’s waist.

When the officer moved to disarm him, the suspect resisted and attempted to grab the police officer’s service firearm.

During the struggle for control of the weapon, it accidentally discharged and hit alias ‘Joe’ on the left side of his face. He was immediately rushed to a local hospital for medical treatment.

Despite the commotion, the operation resulted in the recovery of approximately six grams of suspected shabu, with an estimated value of P40,800, along with the firearm and various drug paraphernalia.

Charges for violations of the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002 and the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act against all three individuals were filed.
