Dumaguete City declared safest to visit

• GILBERT P. BAYORAN

The declaration of Dumaguete City by the World Travel Index (WTI) as the Philippines’ Safest to visit in 2025, was attributed by the Police Regional Office – Negros Island Region to the sustained peace and order efforts of the Negros Oriental Police Provincial Office.

These recognitions reaffirm the hard-work, dedication, and efforts of police personnel of PRO NIR in its entirety, which is indeed worthy of emulation, said P/Brig. Gen. Arnold Thomas Ibay, PRO-NIR regional director.

Dumaguete City earned a high safety rating of 81.36 out of 100, surpassing other cities nationwide, including Davao City, which ranked second with a score of 80.73, WTI said.

According to WTI-Dumaguete Safety Profile, both residents and tourists consistently report feeling safe and secure in the city at any time of the day or night. The city is noted for its very low risks of theft, violence, harassment, scams, and drug-related incidents.

In 2023, Dumaguete also ranked 4th among the safest cities in the Philippines by an international travel website that advises global travelers on secure destinations. These recurring accolades reaffirm not only Dumaguete’s growing reputation but also for the whole Negros Island Region as a safe tourist destination.

This latest recognition reflects the unwavering efforts of the Dumaguete City government, in partnership with the Philippine National Police, dedicated volunteers, and key stakeholders, to ensure the safety, peace, and continued progress of the city, for both residents and visitors alike, Ibay said in a statement.

In 2018, the Philippine Retirement Authority (PRA) named Dumaguete the Best Place to Retire in the Philippines, receiving a score of 97.48, based on global benchmarks set by the United Nations, World Health Organization, and International Living.

The Forbes Magazine included Dumaguete in its list of the Top 5 Best Places to Retire in the World, further solidifying its image as the “City of Gentle People” and an ideal destination for both leisure and retirement.*
