The Municipality of E. B. Magalona received numerous awards at the “2024 EcoLuminaries: Abanse Negrense Awards” at ceremonies at the Negros Residences in Bacolod City on December 19.
Led by Mayor Marvin Malacon and spearheaded by the Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO), the Municipality garnered awards in seven categories.
In the Wetlands Conservation Excellence Awards, it was Top 2 – Excellence in Wetlands Conservation; Best in People-Centered EcoTourism; and the EcoChampions Leadership Award for MENRO-designate Jojo Vargas.
For the Green Environment Award, Top 5 – Best-Managed Local Road Network; Top 8 – Best-Managed Public Plaza; Top 20 – Best-Managed Tree Parks and Greenbelts; Plaque of Appreciation for Focal Person – MENRO-designate Jojo Vargas; Plaque of Recognition – MENRO-designate Jojo Vargas.
Among the best LGUs compliant with Republic Act 9003, it was the 5th Runner-Up.
For, Green School Excellence Award, the E. B. Magalona National High School was a finalist; and the Jose M. Consing Memorial School in Barangay Consing was top 4 in the Green School Award.
Special Award of JMCMS went to Outstanding in Environmental Information, Education, and Advocacy.
Abanse Babaye para sa Dunang Manggad went to the Lenita Prudente of Tanza National High School, while it it won the Baganihan Para sa Kadagatan in the municipal category.
Glecenda Sacon of Tomongtong Mangrove Eco-Trail Women Workers’ Association was among the top 3.
The awards were presented by the Provincial Environment and Management Office (PEMO), headed by Atty. Julie Ann Bedrio. Leading the presentation of awards were Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson, Board Members Andrew Montelibano and Rita Gatuslao, Bedrio, and other Provincial Capitol heads.
Receiving the awards for the Municipal Government were Sangguniang Bayan Member Isidro Gomed Jr., who represented the mayor; MENR Officer-designate Jojo Vargas, and MENRO Solid Waste Management focal person Archie Derick Diel.
Also receiving their awards in the school category were E. B. Magalona National High School assistant principal Gloria Gustilo, Jose M. Consing Memorial School principal Roger Vasquez, EBMNHS documentation head and presenter Jet Quinto, and JMCMS documentation head and presenter Daniel Dumdumaya.
Last year, E. B. Magalona earned a Hall of Fame award for winning for three straight years the Abanse Negrense Good Environmental Governance Award (ANGEGA) in the Local Government Unit category, one of the categories of Abanse Negrense Environmental Awards.*
