Due to multiple road crashes which claimed numerous lives, Senator Juan Victor ‘JV’ Ejercito wants a review and the possible halt of high-speed motorcycle endurance rides on public roads.
Ejercito, a motorcycle rider himself, filed Senate resolution No. 281 to investigate the safety standards, rules and enforcement in high-speed motorcycle endurance events, stressing that roads and streets should not be used as “racing tracks”.
If endurance races must occur, they should take place in contained, closed-circuit environments, not on public highways, he suggested.
He demanded better coordination between organizers and agencies like the Land Transportation Office (LTO), Philippine National Police (PNP), and local government units.
In an interview with Negros-based media, Ejercito, who chairs the Senate Committee on Tourism, said that while motorcycle tourism could help boost the country’s tourism campaign, “it should not be the cause of tragedy.”
“What we aim for is not just for every rider to reach the finish line, but especially to arrive safely and without any accidents. With proper discipline, motorcycle tourism in our country can go even further,” he further stressed.*
