Elder brother kills sibling over property dispute

• THERESA MAE DULMAN

A heated argument over a land portion turned fatal on Wednesday night after a fisherman allegedly stabbed his younger brother to death in Purok Ipil-Ipil, Barangay Bulanon, Sagay City, Negros Occidental.

The suspect, identified by the alias ‘Dodong,’ 42, is now in police custody after killing his 33-year-old brother, ‘Jovan,’ during a drinking session that spiraled into violence.

According to the Sagay City Component Police Station, the incident occurred at approximately 6:55 p.m. on March 25.

Initial investigations revealed that the two brothers were consuming alcohol with six of their neighbors when a disagreement erupted regarding a piece of land located in the Toboso area.

The confrontation escalated physically when the victim reportedly punched the suspect. In a fit of rage, the older brother retrieved a six-inch kitchen knife from his residence and attacked his sibling.

Witnesses stated that the victim attempted to flee the scene, but the suspect pursued him and continued the stabbing.

The victim sustained a fatal wound at his right armpit along with an additional injury to his left hand.

Barangay tanods apprehended the suspect at his home by 7:25 p.m., where he voluntarily surrendered the weapon used in the crime.

Although the victim was rushed to the Alfredo E. Marañon Jr. District Hospital for emergency medical treatment, he was later pronounced dead by the attending physician.

The Sagay CCPS has taken full custody of the suspect for proper disposition and the filing of appropriate charges.

Authorities reminded the public that alcohol often exacerbates existing family conflicts and urged citizens to seek mediation for property disputes through legal or barangay channels.*
