Elderly farmer hacked dead in Hinoba-an

• RICHARD T. CABALLERO JR.

A 67-year-old farmer was killed after he was brutally hacked by a drunk man in broad daylight on Thursday at Barangay San Rafael, Hinoba-an, Negros Occidental.

Initial investigation by the Hinoba-an Municipal Police Station stated that the victim was seated inside his home when the suspect, identified only as alias ‘Ray,’ 41, allegedly passed by the residence and, without provocation, attacked the victim.

The suspect reportedly struck the elderly farmer on the head, right chest, and both arms. Police believe the suspect was under the influence of alcohol during the assault.

The victim was rushed by the Hinoba-an DRRMO ambulance to Eleuterio Decena Memorial Hospital in Barangay Bacuyangan but was declared dead on arrival by the attending physician. His remains are undergoing post-mortem examination.

Responding officers and barangay residents immediately chased and arrested the suspect at the scene.

The suspect is currently detained at the Hinoba-an MPS as investigators prepare sworn statements from witnesses and the complainant for the filing of criminal charges. Authorities continue to look into the motive behind the brutal attack.*
