Lt. Gen. Guillermo Eleazar is the next chief of the Philippine National Police*

The Negros Occidental Police Provincial Office last night congratulated Lt. Gen. Guillermo Eleazar, who was chosen by President Rodrigo Duterte as the next chief of the Philippine National Police.

Eleazar will replace PNP chief, Gen. Debold Sinas, who will retire on May 8 after reaching the mandatory retirement age of 56.

“We confirm that President Duterte has signed the appointment of Eleazar as the new chief of the PNP,” Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said in a press statement.

Interior Secretary Eduardo Año said he had submitted to Duterte a one-man list for consideration on who would lead the 200,000-strong police force.

Roque wished Eleazar the best as he leads the PNP.

Roque said the Palace is confident that Eleazar is capable of leading the police force.

“Gen. Eleazar’s track record of professionalism, dedication, and integrity speaks for itself. We are therefore confident that he will continue the reform initiatives of his predecessors and lead the police organization to greater heights,” he said.

Eleazar is the PNP deputy chief for administration, and served as chief of the PNP Directorial Staff.

He belongs to the Philippine Military Academy “Hinirang” Class of 1987.

He also became the director of the National Capital Region Police Office, the Quezon City Police District, and the Police Regional Office 4-A in Calabarzon.

Eleazar gained popularity for imposing strict discipline on policemen when he was the top cop of Metro Manila, punishing erring cops, and rewarding those who made the police organization proud.

In a statement posted by NOCPPO on its Facebook page last night, Eleazar said that to be appointed the chief PNP is a rare opportunity, but come with the challenges of good leadership and meeting the high expectations of the Filipino people.

“I accept these challenges. I express my sincerest gratitude to our Commander-in-Chief, President Duterte, for choosing me to be among the instruments of his genuine intention of a having a well-disciplined and professional police force that could always be banked on in enforcing the law and in serving and protecting the Filipino people,” he added.

He also thanked Año for always believing in his capability to lead the PNP.*
