Known for his figurative expressionism, the soaring career of Philippine contemporary painter Elmer Borlongan started when he won the second prize twice in MetroBank’s National Painting Competition in 1988 and 1992.

Moving to rural Zambales after he got married was the transfiguration for this highly sought Philippine painter. Just in time for Paris’ Art Basel, the renowned Geraldine Banier Gallery in rue Jacob featured the Borlongan exhibit in conjunction with the 75th French Philippine Diplomatic Relations Anniversary celebration.

H.E. Ambassador Juniver Mahilum West-Philippine Ambassador to France led the VIP guest list which included top art and antique collector Paulino Que and elegant épouse Hetty.

What a treat it was to see Bacolod’s Ricky Yusay of Sugarland Hotel breezing in with his fashion forward groupie who were all set to discover Iceland! Philippine TV personalities Christine Bersola and hubby Julius Babao were adorable while movie producer Ligaya del Fierro was with her sister Theresa who had a most delicious looking son named Michel.

Lording over the whole exhibition was Manila’s top interior decorator Jonathan Matti who brought the sold out exhibit to Paris with the assistance of High Art impresario Pico Gonzalez.

Mr. Matti hosted a more elegant reception the next day together with Ambassador Mahilum-West in Paris’ trés, trés exclusive Cercle L’Union Interalliée at ritzy Faubourg St. Honoré.

From Boho chic to Black Tie de rigueur was definitely a social feat for my Palanginging Jonathan Matti!
