Enjoying summer safely

As temperatures rise across the country and schools break for summer, families are eagerly planning trips to beaches, mountains, and hometowns. The summer season is traditionally a cherished time for rest and reconnection.

However, alongside the promise of sun-soaked days comes the responsibility of ensuring that leisure does not come at the cost of safety.

The oftentimes oppressive Philippine summer is no mild affair. Heat indices regularly climb to dangerous levels, increasing the risk of dehydration, heat exhaustion, and even heat stroke. Children and the elderly are particularly vulnerable. It is essential that families treat hydration as a priority, not an afterthought. Water, not sugary or alcoholic drinks, should be the constant companion of every outing. Scheduling outdoor activities in the early morning or late afternoon can also significantly reduce exposure to extreme heat.

Beach trips, a staple of the season, carry their own hazards. Drowning incidents spike during summer months, often due to overcrowded resorts, lack of supervision, or underestimation of currents. Parents must remember to keep a close watch on children at all times. Knowing one’s limits in the water is not a sign of weakness but of wisdom.

Aside from remembering to stay safe, families also have to reckon with the reality of a fuel crisis that has driven up the cost of travel. Prudence is now part of responsible vacation planning. Carpooling, using public transportation, or choosing nearer destinations can significantly reduce expenses while easing pressure on limited fuel supplies. Combining errands and trips, avoiding unnecessary idling, and planning efficient routes are small but meaningful steps that add up. Even when leisure is involved, times like these call for a measure of restraint and thoughtful consumption.

Aside from our own vigilance, local governments and resort operators also play a crucial role to ensure a safe summer vacation. Adequate signage, accessible first-aid stations, and trained personnel can make the difference between a minor incident and a tragedy. Public reminders and community awareness campaigns should be intensified during peak travel weeks.

Summer in the Philippines is a time to celebrate the country’s natural beauty and vibrant culture. However, enjoyment must go hand in hand with vigilance. A safe vacation is not achieved by chance. It is the result of mindful choices, preparation, and shared responsibility.*
