As the country celebrates National Heroes Day in advance, as part of government’s holiday economics policy, let us take time to remind ourselves of the valiant efforts and sacrifices made by countrymen who have contributed significantly to the betterment of society.
While National Heroes Day is dedicated to other Filipino heroes, particularly in our history, let us also look broader and recognize that heroes come in various forms, and have played various roles in shaping our nation and even just helping out others.
There are already numerous such heroes that can be found in our history books, coming in the form of iconic leaders and freedom fighters. But if we come to think of it, there are countless other heroes who have selflessly dedicated themselves to causes that have significantly impacted our society. Teachers, volunteers, and healthcare workers are just but a few examples of every day heroes that rarely get the recognition they deserve.
National Heroes Day should also serve as a platform to shine a light on the efforts of these silent and hidden heroes in our midst, and we should celebrate their commitment and dedication to making our country, which can be very difficult to love sometimes, a better place.
As we celebrate today’s holiday, let us also acknowledge the power of unity and collective action, as heroes and heroism can often emerge from the collaboration of like-minded individuals striving for a common goal. One becomes a hero not because they do great things some of the time, but because they live lives that inspire many, sometimes an entire nation, to become better.
As we remember the heroes of our country, along with the personal heroes in our lives, let us take inspiration in their words, deeds, and lives. May their heroism inspire us to be better and do more as we collectively put the work into this project called the Philippines. By doing so, we may even become heroes for others who are simply looking for a spark, which can come from the most unlikely places and people.
National Heroes Day is a yearly reminder to all of us that not all heroes wear capes. This means we can find sources of inspiration everywhere, even within ourselves. Let us try our best open our eyes to acts of heroism that can be happening around us, and at the same time, strive to be heroes for others as well.*
