The launch of the Chicks x Get Spotted collection, using fabric produced by the Negros 9 weavers of Kabankalan City, was led by Negros Occidental 6th District Representative Mercedes Alvarez and Bacolod designer Emgee Po-Jimenea Wednesday at Citadines Bacolod.
A fashion show featuring models representing the CHICKS area showcased the exceptional craftsmanship of the local weaving community of the 6th District.
Alvarez said her only intention in this collaboration with Emgee is to promote the CHICKS area and their artisans as well.
Proceeds of their sales or even future sales will be donated to purchase additional loom devices for their weavers to encourage members of the youth in their community to learn the craft, she said.
CHICKS is an acronym for all the six local government units in the 6th District of Negros Occidental, which includes the municipalities of Candoni, Hinobaan, Ilog, Cauayan, as well as the cities of Kabankalan and Sipalay.
Alvarez said “When you hear of the CHICKS area, what comes to mind is insurgency. So we decided to change the impression of CHICKS. Now what comes to mind are white sandy beaches, sustainable tourism, and a lot more.”
She acknowledged Fr. Brian Gore, who attended the launch, as one of their partners in promoting peace in communities in the south. He is the founder of the Negros 9 community, she said, adding that “Because of you, peace has reigned in our community especially in the upland area. Not only that, you have also given hope to our community.”
Also present were Bacolod First Lady Dominique Benitez and Meita Gatasaya, wife of Bacolod Rep. Greg Gasataya.
The CHICKS Get Spotted collection will be showcased at the Negros Trade Fair on September 17 to 22 at Glorietta 2, Makati City, and is also available at Ayala Malls Capitol Central in Bacolod, and can be ordered online.*
