Flashfloods affect 82,929 Negrenses

Floods spawned by heavy rains due to Tropical Storm Paeng affected 82,929 individuals in different local government units of Negros Occidental, according to a report of the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office.

Flashfloods hit 141 Negros Occidental barangays, affecting 19,434 families composed of 82,929 persons. Among those affected, 4,252 families or 17,504 persons, were reported by the PSWDO, to have temporarily sought refuge at evacuation centers.

No casualties were reported in Negros Occidental, while damage to houses, agriculture and infrastructure is yet to be established by the LGUs and government agencies concerned.

Valladolid was the hardest hit LGU in the province, having all 15 barangays submerged, affecting 4,408 families, composed of 21,901 individuals, PSWDO reports as of October 30, showed.

A total of 289 families, composed of 1,164 individuals sought temporary refuge in three evacuation enters in Bacolod City, according to reports of the Bacolod City Public Information Office as of Oct. 30.

Following the lifting of Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal in Visayas by state weather bureau PAGASA, the Coast Guard Station Northern Negros Occidental also allowed resumption of trips of vessels from Daan Bantayan via Cadiz City, to Dumangas via BREDCO and Banago Ports in Bacolod City, to Iloilo via BREDCO Port, Bacolod City, Tabuelan Cebu, via Sagay and Escalante cities, as well as Toledo City, Cebu, via San Carlos City.

PSWD officer Merle Garcia, in her report to Gov. Eugenio Jose Lacson, said all affected LGUs provided family food packs to displaced residents. In coordination with DWSD, Garcia also said that PSWDO provided 30 sacks of rice, 12 boxes of sardines, 25 boxes of beef loaf to Hinobaan, along with 160 family food packs, 14 sacks of rice, 19 boxes of beef loaf and sardines to Cauayan.*
