Twenty-seven former members of the New People’s Army received P20,000 each in financial assistance from the government’s Enhanced Comprehensive Local Integration Program (E-CLIP) and the provincial government of Negros Oriental.

Maj. Khadaffy Tawantawan, Civil Military Operations officer of the 302nd Infantry Brigade, said P15,000 comes from the E-CLIP and P5,000 from the provincial government of Negros Oriental, and the assistance was distributed at the Negros Oriental Convention Center in Dumaguete City on Wednesday.

Tawantawan said the 27 former rebels came from different areas of Negros Oriental.

The Militia ng Bayan (MB) of the NPA is equivalent to the Civilian Armed Forces Geographical Unit, a territorial force of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, that serves as informants and auxiliary armed elements of the NPA in barangays.

Governor Roel Degamo and Col. Bryant Demot, officer-in-charge of the Negros Oriental Police Provincial Office, said they were elated with the results of the continuous collaboration among the local government agencies, AFP, and the PNP, that led to the surrender of 27 former rebels, whom they lauded for their decision to abandon the armed struggle. This is once again a manifestation of the commitment of the government to help those who wish to return to the folds of the law and withdraw their support from the CPP-NPA, Degamo said.*
