Garden Club leads Bago City tree-planting

The Negros Occidental Garden Club (NOGC), one of the most active gardening groups in the country, recently held a major tree planting activity in Barangay Caridad in Bago City.

Some 64 club members assisted in the planting of 150 bamboo saplings along the banks of Bago River, running through the grounds of Balaan Hills Mountain Resort. The resort, with stunning panoramic views of Pataan, Bago City, was created both for recreation and religious pilgrimage. The saplings were provided by DENR and the City Environment Office of Bago City.

“The bamboo plant is an exceptional marvel of nature and its attributes are often overlooked. It has a great ability to abstract carbon emissions and therefore contributes significantly to carbon sequestration, oxygen production, soil and water conservation, biodiversity and habitat provision,” said NOGC president, Lope Nonoy Napao.

“The club has an annual tree planting activity and this was one of the most successful we’ve had in recent years. I would like to thank the many members who toiled away in the heat with such enthusiasm and passion.”

The NOGC, established in 1962, aims to promote a love of gardening, environmental responsibility and civic engagement. It encompasses all topics within horticulture.*
