Mayor Greg Gasataya has strongly condemned the on-air rape joke targeted at a female reporter made by a Bacolod-based radio anchor, confirming that the broadcaster has been placed under preventive suspension.
The incident occurred during a live broadcast where anchor joked about raping a female colleague while reporting on a child abuse case.
“Devolving a serious discussion about the abuse of a minor into a joke about rape exposes a cultural blind spot that must be addressed beyond a statement of regret,” the mayor said.
He added the network’s management compelled the anchor to issue a public apology, issued a Notice to Explain, and placed him under preventive suspension.
Drawing from his own past experience in broadcasting, Gasataya reminded media practitioners of the immense responsibility they hold.
He emphasized that securing safe spaces for women is legally mandated by the Safe Spaces Act and the city’s ‘Bawal Bastos’ Ordinance, adding that these protections must extend into the digital and media landscape. Gasataya called on media practitioners and management to exercise utmost responsibility, reaffirming that the Bacolod City Government stands firmly behind women and is ready to provide support to anyone seeking assistance.*
