The General Alliance of Workers Association (GAWA) is urging the government to prioritize the people’s needs over circus-like projects.
“As the government gets distracted by the spectacle surrounding the flood control projects, we at the General Alliance of Workers Association (GAWA) urge them to refocus on pressing issues that truly matter to the Filipino people: hunger, poverty, high cost of food, and starvation wages,” Wennie Sancho, GAWA secretary general said in a signed statement dated September 5.
While the circus-like atmosphere surrounding the flood control projects may entertain some, it does nothing to address the basic needs of our people, he said, adding “We need a government that prioritizes the welfare of its citizens, not just a few privileged contractors and politicians.”
According to the statement, GAWA is demanding that the government must implement policies to reduce food prices and ensure food security for all; increase wages and improve working conditions for workers; and address poverty and inequality through sustainable and equitable economic development.
“We call on the government to shift its focus from flashy projects to meaningful actions that benefit the majority. We urge our fellow workers, farmers, and all marginalized sectors to join us in demanding a government that truly serves the people,” Sancho added.*
