GAWA links legislated wage hike to Independence Day

The implications of celebrating Independence Day on June 12, without the implementation of the P200 legislated wage hike would be significant, General Alliance of Workers Association (GAWA) secretary general Wennie Sancho said in a press statement, as he sees the implementation of the wage hike as a symbiotic contract.

The statement said celebrating Independence Day while many workers struggle with low wages could be seen as a stark contrast between the ideals of freedom and the harsh realities of economic struggle.

The wage increase could be viewed as a means to achieve economic freedom for the workers, allowing them to better support themselves and their families. Without it, the celebration of independence might ring hollow for many. The coincidence of Independence Day and the wage hike issue would galvanize workers and advocates to push for better labor policies highlighting the need for economic justice and equality, he said.

The celebration would prompt reflection on how true independence means for the working class. Is it merely a national holiday or does it require tangible economic and improved living standards? He asked in his statement.

Sancho said Independence Day and the wage hike issue could amplify the voices of the workers emphasizing the need for policy makers to prioritize economic justice and labor rights. If there is no wage increase, the workers would still face financial difficulties due to the rising cost of living, inflation and other economic challenges. The workers would feel disappointed and frustrated especially if they are counting on the wage hike to improve their living standards.

In the final analysis, the wage hike issue could also spark reflections on the true meaning of independence and economic freedom for the working class. Overall, the failure to implement the wage hike would likely have a negative impact on workers, exacerbating their financial struggle and potentially leading to increased advocacy efforts, the statement added.*
