The battle for signatures has begun, between supporters of the proposed regulated GMO ordinance and those opposing it.
Over 1,500 farmers directly involved in the food security program of the Negros Occidental provincial government have expressed their support for the responsible use of GMOs in agriculture and food production. They acknowledged the potential of GMOs to address pressing challenges in food security, climate resilience, and sustainable development.
A manifesto of support signed by over 1,500 farmers from different local government units was submitted to the provincial government. Provincial Administrator Atty. Rayfrando Diaz stated that the priority of the Negros Occidental provincial government is the welfare of Negrenses, not other countries. This was in response to reports that over 50 international organic organizations have expressed solidarity with the GMO-Free Negros Coalition in their protest against the entry of GMOs into Negros Occidental.
Diaz emphasized the importance of self-sufficiency and co-existence. Livestock and poultry raisers in Negros Occidental have endorsed the passage of the proposed GMO regulatory ordinance, which they believe offers a balanced and practical solution to animal production and business viability challenges.
The signatories of the manifesto of support called on the provincial government leaders to consider the long-term benefits of the ordinance for farmers, animal raisers, and consumers.
In contrast, the GMO-Free Negros Coalition stated that the provincial government should prioritize people and the environment over profit. Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson has reiterated the provincial government’s commitment to supporting organic farming in Negros Occidental.*
