The Eugenio “Bong” V. Lacson Governor’s Cup Tennis Juniors, in coordination with Cebuana Lhuillier, was held in San Carlos City, facilitated by the City Sports Office on June 27-July 2, at the Hard Court SACATA Tennis.

At least 150 players participated in the tournament, hailing from Danao City and Cebu City in the province of Cebu; Bais City, Municipality of Tayasan, Guilhungan City, Municipality of Valencia and Municipality of Zamboanguita in Negros Oriental; Ormoc, Leyte; province of Palawan; Iloilo City; Lanao Del Norte; Manila; and La Carlota City, San Carlos City, Bacolod City and Cadiz City in Negros Occidental.

James Estrella of Cebu City was hailed champion in the 10 under unisex category followed by Maristella Torrecampo of Manila as runner-up, while Ma. Caroliean Fiel of Ormoc City was declared champion of the 12 under girls with Ryle Villamejor of Cadiz City as runner-up.

Shara Paliwag of Valencia City, Negros Oriental, was the champion, defeating Aleeya Suace of Iloilo City who settled for runner-up honors in the 14 under girls category, while Kimi Brodeth of Ormoc City went home as champion in the 16 under girls after defeating Jasmin Jaran of La Carlota City who settled as runner-up.

In the 18 under girls’ category, Jufe Ann Cocoy of La Carlota City was the champion after defeating Brodeth, while David Ezra Sepulvida of Cebu City remained on top and went home as champion beating Matthew Moris of Dumaguete City in the 12 under Boys category.

Renante Bravo Jr. of Ormoc City and Kurt Barrera of Tayasan, Negros Oriental were hailed as champion and runner-up, respectively, in the 14 under Boys category.

In the 16 under Boys category, John Kendrick Bona of Palawan City and Mcleen Gomera of Lanao Del Norte were the champion and runner-up.

Bona once again played in the 18 under boys but settled for runner-up after John David Velez of Ormoc City defeated him to earn the title of champion.

Negros Occidental Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson said that lawn tennis is one of the top games and many good players have already reached other places through it, adding that if an individual wants to be a famous player, he/she needs to sacrifice in order to achieve that dream and also reminded the players to prioritize their studies.

Also present at the event were San Carlos City Vice-Mayor Christopher Paul Carmona; Jackie Tomacruz, Unified Tennis Philippines tournament director; and Jun Tabura, assistant tournament director.*
