The People’s Coalition for Good Governance (PCGG) through its convenor Wennie Sancho, in a statement vehemently condemned the rampant corruption within the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) and other agencies of the government where corrupt politicians and contractors have formed an unholy alliance that bleed the people dry.
Sancho said the unholy alliance has resulted in substandard infrastructure projects endangering the lives and undermining the nation’s progress.
The DPWH, an agency meant to build and maintain government infrastructure like bridges, farm-to-market roads etc., has become a breeding ground for corruption, he said.
Sancho avers that corrupt politicians and contractors are working together to siphon off billions of pesos meant for public projects. As a result, the people are suffering, stuck in the traffic on poorly maintained roads, forced to navigate flooded streets due to substandard flood control projects, including bridges that had collapsed. The people are burdened by the weight of corruption that seems to permeate in every level of government.
Sancho’s statement warned that “If these corruption would go unchecked, our country would go down to the dogs and our economy would be stagnant, weighed down by the burden of corruption and inefficiency. The people would lose faith in our leaders and the future would be bleak.”
Corrupt politicians and contractors however, seem to be thriving, amassing fortunes through ill-gotten gains. They live in luxury while the people struggle to make ends meet. The system seems to be rigged against the ordinary citizens with no accountability or transparency, he said.*
