BY GILBERT P. BAYORAN / CHRYSEE G. SAMILLANO

The first Comelec gun ban violator was arrested by the police on Sunday night at a checkpoint at highway Mabinay in Brgy. 9, Kabankalan City, Negros Occidental.

Nabbed was Cristopher Gaisen, 21, of Sitio Bunga, Brgy Orong, Kabankalan City.

The arrest of Gaisen took place while he and his father, who were riding on a motorcycle, were flagged down at the checkpoint for an inspection.

In plain view, policemen manning the checkpoint noticed the handle of a gun protruding in unzipped sling bag of the suspect.

Recovered from his possession was .38 caliber revolver with five ammunition.

The police also recovered two more bladed weapons from the suspect, who is now detained at the Kabankalan City police custodial facility.

BACOLOD CHECK POINTS

Meanwhile, Bacolod Election Officer Katrina Triño-Caña said yesterday that Commission on Elections check points conducted in Bacolod City starting midnight Sunday were generally peaceful with no apprehension for violation of the election gun ban.

Caña said Comelec Bacolod will be setting up check points jointly with the Philippine National Police in 12 areas in the city at different times and days until the end of the election period on June 8.

The police have been reminded to observe proper conduct of check points although they already know their duties on how to implement the law. Check points should be conducted in plain view, she said.

Caña reminded motorists to wear their face masks when talking to police officers at check points.

Meanwhile Caña said security details of politicians are being recalled at the start of the election period except in high-risk areas granted exemption by the Comelec.

But there are certain positions allowed security details by the Comelec like the President and Vice President. All the rest of the politicians will have their security details recalled at the start of the election period, she said.

If they need to be assigned security details or personnel, they should make a request before the Comelec, Cana added.*
