Gun incident goes viral, alarms Talisay City mayor

• GILBERT P. BAYORAN

Alarming and unacceptable.

That was how Mayor Neil Lizares described the video of a gun firing incident in Barangay Dos Hermanas in Talisay City, Negros Occidental, involving an armed suspect and an agrarian reform beneficiary, that went viral on social media.

Lizares, who personally saw the viral video, said the incident stemmed from a land conflict involving private parties.

“I have always been clear on my stand that I do not and will not tolerate any kind of violence against any Talisaynon. Instead, I always promote resolving legal issues in a legal and peaceful manner,” he stressed in a statement posted in social media.

In the viral video, the suspect, accompanied by five other men, was seen firing his gun at a female agrarian reform beneficiary at the place on January 31.

A complaint was filed on Friday against the suspect at the Talisay City Police Station.

The Commission on Elections in Negros Occidental has ordered the Negros Occidental Provincial Police Office to investigate the incident, according to Provincial Election Supervisor Atty. Ian Lee Ananoria.

PLt. Col. Salvador Trono Jr., Talisay City police chief, said they are searching for the man in the video, who will face charges for violation of the Commission on Elections’ gun ban, grave threats, and illegal discharge of a firearm.

Lizares, who also ordered a full blown investigation into the incident, said the Talisay City Police Station has been alerted to avoid the conflict from further escalating. No one was reported injured during the incident.*
