The civilian who was injured during a series of gunbattles between remnants of the New People’s Army and government forces in Barangay Tapi, Kabankalan City, Negros Occidental, is now in stable condition, according to the Philippine Army.
The victim, identified as Marcel Camangyan Anguit, is presently being treated for injuries sustained from the incident at the Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital in Bacolod City.
In a statement, Maj. Gen. Michael Samson, 3rd Infantry Division commander, assured the family of the victim that he will receive the best possible medical care.
Anguit was reportedly used as a human shield by the rebels who were withdrawing from the encounter site.
Seven rebels died in the series of encounters, which also led to the recovery of six M16 assault rifles and a KG9 automatic pistol, among other war materials.
“We also extend our deepest condolences to the families of those killed—regardless of their affiliations. Every life lost in armed conflict is a tragedy,” Samson said.*
