Army soldiers recovered firearms during an encounter with suspected New People’s Army rebels in Sitio Nabalaskan, Brgy. Napacao, Siaton, Negros Oriental, on Saturday.

Soldiers of the 11th Infantry Battalion figured in an encounter with six NPA rebels, believed to be remnants of the South East Front of the Komiteng Rehiyonal-Negros, Maj. Cenon Pancito, 3rd Infantry Division spokesman, said.

After about 15 minutes of armed skirmishes, Pancito said rebels withdrew toward the north direction, and left behind an M16 assault rifle, a .45 caliber pistol, a laptop, and five cellular phones.

No soldier was hurt in the armed skirmishes, and 11IB troopers are still scouring the encounter site, and pursuing the rebels, he added.

RIFLE GRENADE

A rifle grenade was also recovered by the police from a suspect, who managed to elude arrest, at a checkpoint in Brgy. Hacienda Fe, Escalante City, Negros Occidental, on Saturday.

The unidentified suspect was riding a blue Rusi motorcycle without plate number and ignored the police, who tried to stop him, at the checkpoint. While being chased by the police, the suspect threw away a sling bag containing the explosive and managed to escape.*
