San Carlos Mayor Renato Gustilo has sought the cooperation of resto-bar operators in the city’s fight against the coronavirus disease 2019.

The mayor met with the operators Thursday over their reported violations of safety and health protocols against Covid.

Gustilo told them to understand that the city is very strict in the implementation of health protocol and guidelines set by the Inter-Agency Task Force on Covid-19 because the city can be held liable if people continue violating the rules that could spike the cases, a press release from the city said.

He asked them to cooperate because it is for the good of everybody.

“The city government understands your plight nowadays that’s why it has permitted the opening of your establishments, so let us understand and help each other,” Gustilo stressed.

He told the resto-bar operators that the city government will provide them the materials for the construction of barriers on their tables, to ensure the safety of customers.

Owners and operators of resto-bars were summoned before the Emergency Operations Center for them to explain their side on reports that they allegedly failed to implement the health protocols on physical distancing and wearing of face masks and shields, and also allowed “sing-along” or karaoke, and accommodated customers more than the allowed 50 percent capacity.

City Administrator Estefanio Libutan Jr., also an EOC member, explained to them the weight of offenses and penalties, and urged them to be cautious at all times or they may face charges.

Libutan also said they can accommodate parties and events as long as they follow the capacity limitation and other important guidelines, the press release said.

Sangguniang Panlungsod member Clint Mansueto suggested to business operators to play sports events on TV to entertain their customers, and ordered them to create barriers on tables following the recommended measurements to prevent close body contact among customers.

SP member and EOC commander, Dr. Wilmer Yap, appealed to the businessmen to understand and help the city government in its fight against Covid, and to follow the safety standards to avoid health risks. He also suggested to business establishments at the boulevard to have their customers face only one side and not each other, in addition to physical distancing to avoid getting droplets from one another, the press release said.

City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office head Joe Recalex Alingasa told business operators to coordinate with the City Tourism Office on the guidelines to be followed, and said that although they were allowed to operate, sing-along or karaoke is still prohibited. He said that, as operators, they can set the rules for their customers to follow.

“The government’s strict measures are aimed at protecting lives, so you must also do your best to protect the lives of your customers,” he added.*
