Guv still optimistic on PGN bridge

• GILBERT P. BAYORAN

Despite setbacks in the bidding for the detailed engineering design (DED) of the proposed Panay Guimaras Negros (PGN) bridge, Gov. Eugenio Jose Lacson remains optimistic on the realization of the mega infrastructure project, stressing that it is included in the list of projects to be pursued by President Marcos Jr.

The rebidding of PGN engineering design, as decided by the Department of Public Works and Highways, was revealed by the Engr. Arecio Casing Jr, regional director of the National Economic Development Authority Western Visayas, after the bid price exceeded the allocated loan proceeds and the original contract estimate of the DPWH.

Recalling that the bridge project has been on the table for so many years, Lacson said it is possible that the price then is no longer applicable.

Then, they have to sit down and hear the side of the bidders, why it is already at this cost, and the national government will have to verify that, and look at the material costs right now, the governor said.

That’s the problem with this project, it is so delayed, even the program of work many years ago is not applicable now. Unfortunately, this will delay the construction of the Panay Guimaras Negros bridge, he added.

The PGN bridge, spanning a total of 32,474 meters or 32.47 kilometers, is divided into two sections: Section A, connecting Panay Island to Guimaras Island, and Section B, linking the islands of Guimaras and Negros.

Initial information revealed that Section A of the project would cost about P58 billion, while Segment B would cost more than double, or up to P120 billion.

Lacson said he is still optimistic on the realization of the project, stressing “I think the President would like to see that, because that is one legacy that he can leave behind for Region 6.”*
