Negros Occidental Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson yesterday said that he will request Negros Power to light up the century-old Provincial Capitol Building in Bacolod City, similar to what it did to illuminate the San Diego Pro-Cathedral in Silay City, Negros Occidental.
Lacson said he will take up the request during a scheduled meeting with Negros Power officials.
The Negros Occidental Provincial Capitol Building, which was designed by Architect Juan M. Arellano in Beaux-Arts style, was built from 1927 to 1935 during the Commonwealth Period as a symbol of the province’s sugar-fueled prosperity.
Serving as the seat of the provincial government, it withstood World War II when it was used by the Japanese Imperial Forces as its headquarters, and has since been restored and preserved.
It was declared a National Historical Landmark in 2004 and remains a proud emblem of Negrense heritage and governance.*
