BY GILBERT P. BAYORAN

Negros Occidental Gov. Eugenio Jose Lacson said yesterday that he is joining senior citizens in availing of the vaccine against the coronavirus disease 2019.

This was after Bacolod City Mayor Evelio Leonardia got his first dose of AstraZeneca vaccine Saturday, following an advisory from the National Covid-19 Vaccination Operations Center, allowing the vaccination of local chief executives from critical and high risk provinces, cities, and municipalities.

‘HIGH RISK’

Negros Occidental has been classified a high risk area by the Department of Health-Western Visayas.

Lacson, who is waiting for a go-signal for vaccination from Provincial Health Officer, Dr. Ernell Tumimbang, said he is willing to take the Sinovac vaccine. “I’m more than convinced already that the vaccine is good,” he added.

With the availability of the Sinovac vaccines as of this time, Lacson said he will go for it, since the second jab is three weeks after, while the AstraZeneca supply is taking too much time.

The AstraZeneca vaccines ordered by local government units may arrive in July.

Provincial Administrator Rayfrando Diaz said the vaccination schedule for senior citizens in Negros Occidental will depend on the supply of vaccines to be given by the national government.

PRIORITY GROUP

Right now, the vaccines being given by the provincial government is for those under the A1 priority group, or the medical frontliners, Diaz said.

In Advisory No. 26 released by the National Covid-19 Operations Center, Juan Jovian Ingeniero, regional director of the Department of Interior and Local Government in Western Visayas, said eight mayors in Negros Occidental are qualified to be vaccinated. They are mayors Leonardia of Bacolod City, Salvador Escalante – Cadiz City, Victor Gerardo Rojas – Murcia, Niel Lizares – Talisay City, Nicholas Yulo – Bago City, Maria Gina Montilla – Sipalay City, and Alejandro Mirasol – Binalbagan.*
