Guv wants Zayco to stay as NPC provincial chairman

• GILBERT P. BAYORAN

Gov. Eugenio Jose Lacson wants former Kabankalan City Mayor Isidro Zayco to stay as the provincial chairman of the Nationalist People’s Coalition in Negros Occidental.

Lacson made the statement in reaction to plans of Zayco, who had served as board member, vice governor, and governor of Negros Occidental, to give up the NPC provincial chairmanship.

His reason for giving up the position, Zayco said he is now an ordinary civilian, and no longer in government service.

“He has been wanting to step down, but we always encouraged him to stay,” Lacson said.

Aside from Zayco and Lacson, other NPC members in Negros Occidental are Representative Mercedes Alvarez (6th district, Negros Occidental), and Rep. Gerardo Valmayor (1st district), among others.

If you ask me, I would like to have him (as the party provincial chairman), being the senior member of NPC, and a favorite of the late Ambassador Eduardo “Danding” Cojuangco, the governor said.

Zayco has reportedly been eyeing a return as mayor of Kabankalan City. He, however, did not confirm those rumors, adding that it will be known in October, during the filing of Certificate of Candidacy.

His brother, Pedro Zayco, was defeated by Benjie Miranda, a former soldier turned politician, during the 2022 Kabankalan City mayoral race.*
