The Department of Health has advised the public to be more conscious of the food they consume during the holidays, as the peak of the Christmas party season approaches.
It called on the public to avoid overeating, especially food high in sugar, fats, and oil during the holidays, and encouraged those in food preparation to check the expiration date of ingredients and ensure that the food is cooked properly. It also reminded those who bring leftover food to keep it in the refrigerator to prevent spoilage and contamination.
The DOH also added that minors, pregnant women, and drivers should avoid consuming alcoholic drinks.
The reminders were echoed by the Philippine Health Insurance Corp., which stressed that blood sugar levels may rise due to the consumption of sweets, along with reminding Filipinos to exercise regularly and avoid smoking to maintain weight and blood pressure at normal levels.
The next few days will be the peak of the holidays, where consumerism and partying takes center stage. As we partake of the celebrations, let us also be conscious of our health and the impacts of overindulgence, especially for those who already have health issues that could be aggravated further, which would be a terrible Christmas present for those affected and their families.
Those of us with comorbidities should try to enjoy the festivities as safely as possible, keeping health in mind. As our kitchens are busy at this time of year, food preparation and storage will also need a little more attention in order to ensure there are no untoward incidents, considering the quantities of food involved, throughout the numerous parties and gatherings expected in the coming days and weeks.
Let us enjoy this year’s celebration of the holidays the best way we can, with family and loved ones, in the safest and healthiest ways possible. By taking the proper precautions and making small sacrifices, we will be able to spend more such holidays together.*
