BY GILBERT P. BAYORAN

Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson has issued a memorandum formally designating Valeriano M. Gatuslao Memorial District Hospital in Himamaylan City as COVID-19 center in Negros Occidental.

This brings to three the number of COVID-19 facilities in the province, including the Cadiz and Valladolid District Hospitals.

In his issued memorandum, Lacson said that all COVID-19 positive Negrenses that are considered moderate cases shall be referred to VMGMDH, where they shall receive proper treatment until they are fit to be discharged.

In anticipation of lack of hospital beds for COVID-19 patients, as the number of active cases in Negros Occidental soared to more than 3,004 from more than 600 a month ago, as of September 21, the provincial government of Negros Occidental is now looking at three major quarantine facilities in EB Magalona, Silay and Cadiz cities, for conversion into field hospitals.

Provincial Health Officer Dr. Ernell Tumimbang yesterday said that the number of active cases for the month of September is now 3,514.

In April, Tumimbang said they recorded 3,991 cases.

The Department of Health placed Negros Occidental and Bacolod City under Alert Level 4 due to increasing number of cases and high risk in health care utilization rates.

Tumimbang said that they have also recorded 19 persons infected with highly contagious Delta variant, three of them already died, with contact tracing still ongoing for their close contacts.

The surge in cases of COVID-19 in Negros Occidental was attributed by Tumimbang to violation of mandated health protocols, aside from the local transmission of the Delta variant.*
