The Negros Occidental Provincial Government and the Provincial Sports Office opened the Abanse Negresne Governor’s Cup Provincial Boxing Tournament at the Municipality of Don Salvador Benedicto (DSB) covered court on November 6, Sunday.
The municipality of Hinigaran remained unscathed with two wins and no losses. Don Salvador Benedicto, the host LGU, recorded three wins and two losses.
Bago City also garnered 3 wins and 2 losses. Other LGUs with recorded wins were Himamaylan and Murcia with 2 wins and 2 losses, while the cities of Victorias, Bacolod and Escalante all recorded one win and one loss. The municipality of La Castellana logged 1 win and 3 losses.
Boxing proved its popularity among the Negrosanons, with the presence of a large and cheering crowd who were thrilled to witness the tournament, which consisted of 15 bouts.
The opening ceremony of the boxing tournament was attended by Provincial Sports Office Head Anthony Carlo Agustin, who gave the opening remarks. Also in attendance were DSB Mayor Lawrence Marxlen Dela Cruz and Vice Mayor Nehemiah Joe Dela Cruz.
Mayor Dela Cruz gave an inspirational speech while the vice mayor declared the official opening of the tournament. The oath of sportsmanship was led by Rodolfo Labang Jr., the DSB silver medalist boxer at the Palarong Pambansa 2022 Vismin League in Cebu City.
The Governor’s Cup Provincial Boxing Tournament will continue with elimination bouts on Nov. 12-13 in the municipality of Don Salvador Benedicto.*
