“We will report you to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources for the revocation of your Environmental Compliance Certificates”.

The warning was issued yesterday by Department of Public Services head Nelson Sedillo against hospitals in Bacolod that throw hazardous wastes at city’s sanitary landfill in Brgy. Felisa.

Reports said that IPM Construction and Development Corporation, the authorized garbage hauler of Bacolod, was able to recover hazardous wastes placed in yellow and black bags on three separate occasions last month.

Among the hospital wastes recovered were syringes, dextrose hose, medical and surgical masks, blood bags, and used personal protective equipment (PPE) gear, among others.

Although he said he believes that this was not deliberately neither intentionally done, Sedillo said, this should not happen again.

That is why the DPS together with IPMCDC met with the pollution control officers of the different hospitals in Bacolod regarding the matter and they assured that they will abide with the proper protocols on proper garbage disposal, Sedillo said.

Before hauling, hospital management will now be required to issue a certification that their garbage does not contain hazardous wastes, he also said.

WARNING

Sedillo reiterated that if this will happen again, DPS and IPMCDC will return the hazardous wastes to the hospital and will let them pay the backload fee on top of the possible revocation of their ECC.

Meanwhile, Sedillo said they will not renew the contract of IPMCDC with the city if reports are true that collectors refused to haul the garbage of residents who do not or refuse to give money.

Residents who experienced refusal of garbage collection for failure to give money to the IPMCDC collectors may report the incident to the DPS for proper action, he added.

Sedillo already met with the IPMDCD about the matter and the latter agreed that collectors who are asking fees or money from residents will no longer be contracted by the company. He explained, however, that it is acceptable only if the residents voluntarily give money to the garbage collectors.*
