Twinkling with Ninfa R. Leonardia

Wanna fly to the moon? A Japanese billionaire is planning to go on a trip there and is inviting eight persons to go with him. But they must apply before March 14, be interviewed and checked for their qualifications to undergo it. If you are interested, better apply now because the trip has been scheduled for year 2023, and will last for six days. I suppose one of the requirements is that you should know how to sing that famous old hit titled “Fly me to the moon”. Still remember it?

***

I loved that song and it was very useful to me when I was working at the DBP in Makati and the administration discovered that I used to be a teacher. Forthwith, I was assigned to the group that was conducting seminars on bank policies and communication all over the country. Being a lover  of travel and adventure, I was figuratively like a fish thrown into the water. And that was also how I was able to go to all the cities in the country where the DBP had branches.

At the time, one of the biggest hits was the one titled “Fly me to the moon”, I found it a perfect example, for illustrating what you say or write very clearly if you want to be understood. I loved to use the song as an example by telling my audiences “Do not say ‘fly me to the moon’ if what you want to say is “Hold my hand”, or “Darling kiss me”. I noted that the bank staff who attended the sessions enjoyed it, but what I did not imagine was that the staff  in Iligan would serenaded us lecturers in our hotel, and their popular singer, a certain Gus Mangona, their “Frank Sinatra”, sang it under our hotel room window!

This memory tempted me to be interested in a flight to the moon, but I guess senior citizens will be denied outright. But those younger ones who are interested better apply now as there may be hundreds of applicants. The name of the billionaire is Yusaku, but I’m sorry his address has not been published, so those interested must research for themselves, and I wish them luck. Eight  people will be considered to join the trip that will take place in year 2023, and will last for six days.

By the way, when are we starting the vaccination of our residents against the COVID plague? Have the vaccines promised to us already arrived, and are our people ready to be vaccinated? Seems there is only a small number willing to accept it, and they seem to be doubtful of the one that is coming from China. In San Diego, I read from an item  that they are vaccinating the monkeys in their zoo, and if monkeys are not complaining, why should we? Meanwhile, have the vaccines already arrived in our city?

Meanwhile, I heard a few days ago that an 8.1 magnitude earthquake was expected in New Zealand. My, that should   be    a mighty strong one and, not only that, a tsunami was also expected. But perhaps it had not occurred, or, at least, must have toned down its ferocity because news yesterday did not seem to focus on it. Maybe, I just missed it? I hope and prayed, though, that it would not occur, the world is suffering from so many calamities and natural ones, so the Good Lord must have spared us this time.

According to the latest news yesterday, more and more people in the Philippines are submitting to vaccination. They must have lost their original mistrust of it, especially the one from China. But Health officials are claiming that more and more are submitting now, so perhaps, we might reach that ideal they call “herd immunity” sooner. I take that to mean that if majority of the people have already been vaccinated, the rest may be considered safe already. True or false?

As I write this last section of Twinkling, news coming from the TV said that President Duterte is urging Filipinos to undergo vaccination already. But me, I have  been waiting to see a picture or TV coverage of him getting his shot before I yield. Follow the leader, you know? How about it, Mr. President? Let us see you getting your vaccine, and maybe that will remove our fears and cowardice, too!*
