The inter-cropping of sugarcane and rice in Hinigaran town, the pilot area in Negros Occidental, yielded its first harvest in three months.

Negros Occidental Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson visited Hacienda Bagacay in Barangay Aranda yesterday to check on the completed cycle of the Sugarcane-Rice Intercropping System Project, that is a collaborative endeavor of the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist and the Sugar Regulatory Administration and was launched in June this year.

This is to help farmers to be more productive and to earn extra income.

The palay seeds were planted in the block farm of Hacienda Bagacay Workers CARPer (Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program Extension with Reforms) Beneficiaries Association and are now ready for harvest after three months.

Lacson thanked the farmers for their cooperation that contributed to the success of the program.

He also said the project will be replicated in other towns and cities of the province because it is one way of ensuring food security amidst the pandemic that has been affecting the province.

Provincial Agriculturist Japhet Masculino said the project is also part of maximizing the province’s 190,000 hectares of land devoted to monocrop sugarcane farming.

Joining the governor were SRA Board Member Emilio Yulo III and Hinigaran Mayor Nadie Arceo.*
