Isabela Mayor Irene Montilla yesterday said that whoever is responsible for the loss of money, amounting to P2.6 million in cash and P3.8 million in checks, which was reported missing by former municipal treasurer Nenette Escarda, she will hold accountable.

Escarda, who served as officer in charge of the Isabela Municipal Treasurer Office (MTO), was replaced on February 2 by Jessie Gumapas, as ordered by the Bureau of Local Government Finance, following Montilla’s request for the former to be relieved, due to loss of trust and confidence.

Escarda reported to the police that the money and checks were missing, and is now under investigation.

Montilla yesterday clarified that Escarda is not authorized to bring home property of the municipal government, nor allowed to deposit in the bank the collections made by the Isabela Municipal Treasurer’s Office.

The mayor clarified that she had assigned somebody else to deposit Isabela MTO collections to a bank.

Montilla assured Isabeleños, especially the municipal employees, including job order workers, that they have enough funds for wages, and that delivery of services to the people will not be affected.

The missing money reportedly came from payments for real property taxes, business tax and other collections made by MTO employees, from end of December last year, to January this year, the mayor said.

Rest assured, we will try to make, whoever is responsible, pay for this, Montilla stressed.

The mayor also announced that she assigned new sets of personnel at the MTO, following the designation of a new head.*
