The Kanlaon Volcano on Negros Island emitted ash multiple instances on March 23 , with ash plumes seen rising 500 meters above the crater, according to the the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS).
The first ash emission took place at 6:54 a.m, followed by another emission at 2:40 p.m., while the third one happened at 5:44 p.m. on Monday.
PHIVOLCS also recorded 18 volcanic quakes, including 10 volcanic tremors, ranging from 11 to 91 minutes long.
The plumes drifted in a southwest direction.
From March 20 to 22, PHIVOLCS recorded 15 ash emission events at Kanlaon Volcano
“Alert Level 2 is maintained over Kanlaon Volcano and entry into the 4 kilometer PDZ (Permanent Danger Zone) must be prohibited,” PHIVOLCS said.
The volcanic edifice remains inflated, suggesting pressure is building within the volcano.
Kanlaon Volcano had moderately explosive eruptions on February 19 and 26, as well as March 15.
PHIVOLCS raised the possibility of hazards that may occur, including sudden steam-driven or phreatic eruptions, which is a precursor to magmatic activity.*
