Kanlaon Volcano spews ash anew

• GILBERT P. BAYORAN

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported the occurrence of another ash emission, which lasted 10 minutes at Kanlaon Volcano on April 28.

Based on its 24 hour monitoring, since Sunday, PHIVOLCS recorded 11 volcanic quakes, including a volcanic tremor which lasted several minutes, and the emission of 1,683 tons of sulfur dioxide, generating a plume as high as 200 meters.

The volcano edifice is inflated, PHIVOLCS added.

Alert Level 3 remains hoisted over Kanlaon Volcano.

That means there is a high level of volcanic unrest. Magmatic intrusion to shallow levels of the edifice is driving unrest, with indications that a hazardous eruption could occur, according to PHIVOLCS.

The Department of Tourism (DOT) has suspended tourism activities in several areas in Negros Occidental, following the ashfall caused by the recent eruption of Kanlaon Volcano.*
