
Kathlyn Bugna of La Carlota, Negros Occidental flashed her brilliant form again, securing three titles in the Bagong Pilipinas Age Group Championships last Monday at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center in Malate, Manila.
The 14-year-old Batang Onay/RSB standout clobbered Francine Wong, 6-0, 6-2, in the U16 finals, then scored a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Chiara Bate in the U18 finals.
Bugna also won the U18 doubles crown with Tori Deocampo. They beat Jana Bermejo and Khalilah Imalay, 8-4. Bugna, a grade 8 student from Doña Hartencia Salas Benedicto National High School, captured three titles at the Bagong Pilipinas leg in Roxas City, Capiz last month.
In the boys division, Miguel Lagac III of Quezon City prevailed over Nicholas Andal, 6-0, 6-1, to rule the U16 category. He also bagged the U18 title over Yñigo Naredo, 6-4, 6-2.
Bugna and Lagac both earned MVP honors in the Group 2 tournament sanctioned by Philta and Universal Tennis.
In the U14 category, Tyronne Caro won the boys title over Jairus Peralta, 6-4, 7-6(5), while Wong clinched the girls crown over Michaela Suarez, 6-3, 6-3.
In the U12 finals, Raven Licayan of Cavite defeated Noel Andre Zachary Zoleta, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2, and Iloilo’s Kate Chavez drubbed Ellythia Comia, 6-1, 6-1.
Winners in the doubles were Yñigo Naredo/Cristiano Calingasan over Gavin Kraut/Tristan Licayan, 8-6 (boys U18); Jaynelle Castro/ Athena Liwag over Teresinha Calingasan/Kate Chavez, 8-3 (girls U14); and Jairus Peralta/Jan Caleb Villeno over Tyrone Caro/Raven Licayan, 8-1 (boys U14).
