The Generator Alliance of Workers Association (GAWA), supports the No Work No Pay Bill for Legislators, including local government units’ (LGU) appointed and elected officials.
GAWA secretary general Wennie Sancho said “this principle is already applied to all ordinary workers and it’s only fair that government officials should set an example.”
The bill, filed by House Majority Leader Sandro Marcos, seeks to promote transparency, accountability and integrity in governance. It ensures that public funds are spent only when elected officials fulfill their duties.
GAWA believes this is a step towards good governance and fair treatment of taxpayers’ money. Ordinary workers are not paid if they don’t work, there’s no reason that government officials should be exempted. There is no law that exempts them from this principle making it a matter of fairness and it will promote discipline and responsibility among elected and appointed officials in the government, Sancho said.
“GAWA strongly recommends that the proposed No Work No Pay Bill should be extended to all government officials including the local government units (LGU). We support this bill as it ensures that public funds are spent only when public service is rendered, he said.
As a labor advocate, Sancho strongly believes that the proposed No Work No Pay Bill aims to treat legislators equally to ordinary workers emphasizing that they should not receive special treatment just because they are in office. If this principle applies to all workers nationwide, it would apply even more so to those who are crafting the laws. Public funds must only be released when public service is actually rendered.*
