The Kilusang Mayo Uno (KMU) – Negros and other labor organizations issued a statement condemning the arrest Julie Ann Balora, a National Council member of the National Federation of Sugar Workers, in Talisay City, Negros Occidental, last April 22.
In a press conference, Bayan Negros spokesperson Noli Rosales confirmed that the group has integrated Balora’s release into their key demands for the upcoming Labor Day demonstrations, today, May 1.
The Police Regional Office Negros Island Region arrested Balora and 4 other individuals allegedly linked to Communist Terrorist Groups.
Authorities conducted Operation ‘Head Strike’ to serve an arrest warrant against an alias ‘Glen,’ a squad leader of the North Negros Front, for attempted murder.
The mission was conducted by the elements of the police Regional Intelligence Division and 79th Infantry Battalion.
Human rights group Karapatan reported that Balora has raised allegations regarding the conduct of the apprehension and claimed she witnessed operatives placing bags inside the vehicle which were later identified by police as containing firearms and hand grenades, items she denies owning.
Balora is the sibling of Genevieve Balora, one of the New People’s Army members who were killed during the Toboso armed encounter on April 19 that resulted in the death of 19 individuals.*
