Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson yesterday said that he and former Rep. Alfredo Benitez have agreed to consult each on the presidential candidate to be supported in the May 2022 elections.

Lacson said it was agreed not come up with the choice of presidential candidate for now, pending consultations.

Through consultations, maybe we could come up with one choice, Lacson, in an interview with DYWB Bombo Radyo said.

Lacson, who is affiliated with the Nationalist People’s Coalition, said that Benitez recently attended the PDP-Laban meeting in Boracay, where he is not aware of the results.

As of this time, there is no decision on the national (level), he added.

But Lacson said it is ideal to come up with one choice as a province.

Several Negros Occidental mayors already expressed their support to the call for Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio to run for president.

But Carpio said that she will seek re-election as mayor of Davao City, he added.

We will wait whoever will file their candidacy for president, Lacson also said.

NPC vice presidential candidate Vicente Sotto and presidential candidate Senator Panfilo Lacson who recently visited Negros Occidental said that Gov. Lacson has publicly announced that he will support the NPC candidates.

Vice Gov. Jeffrey Ferrer, who is the provincial chairman of National Unity Party, earlier said that they will support a presidential candidate endorsed by their party.

During the 2016 presidential elections, majority of Negros Occidental local chief executives led by the late Gov. Alfredo Maranon Jr. rallied behind with presidential candidate Mar Roxas, who was defeated by Rodrigo Roa Duterte.*
