Lacson optimistic PBBM will sign NIR bill, despite Zubiri ouster as Senate president

• GILBERT P. BAYORAN

Negros Occidental Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson yesterday said that the Negros Island Region bill was approved “based on merits,” and not because of the personalities of those who approved it.

Lacson made the clarification in the wake of apprehensions by some that the NIR will not be approved by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., following the ouster of Juan Miguel “Migz” Zubiri as Senate president.

Zubiri principally authored the NIR, which was overwhelmingly approved by the Senate.

Senator Imee Marcos, who recently visited Negros Occidental, said the NIR bill is now in Malacañang.

Both Lacson and Senator Marcos are confident that it will be signed into law by PBBM.*
