Lawyer Mark Steven Mayo (center) filed his COC as independent candidate for councilor of Bacolod City in the presence of his parents, Brgy. 22 captain Diosdado and Selfa Mayo*

Lawyer Mark Steven Mayo, who is running as an independent candidate for councilor of Bacolod City, yesterday denied having been invited to join the team of former Neg. Occ., 3rd District congressman Albee Benitez, when asked about the inclusion of his name in the list of candidates for councilor of Team Asenso Bacolod.

Mayo, 27, said he has neither received any invitation from Benitez’s team or from Grupo Progreso, led by Mayor Evelio Leonardia. He is firm in his decision to run as a neutral candidate and as an official candidate for councilor of the Nationalist People’s Coalition (NPC) together with Bacolod Rep. Greg Gasataya, and that he has no affiliation to any local group.

He said he will be filing his resignation as consultant of Gasataya effective October 1 since he has already filed his certificate of candidacy (COC) yesterday, together with the solon.

Mayo said that if given the chance to serve, he wants to build a partnership between the Sangguniang Panlungsod and the Office of Gasataya in terms of maximizing the programs of the Congressional Office, backed up with local legislation for the realization of projects for the city, as well as localize and maximize the city’s scholarship program, which has been affected by the pandemic, and had caused many to lose their opportunity to avail of scholarship. This will be done in partnership with the Public Employment Service Office (PESO).

He will consider it will an honor and pride to become the voice of the ordinary people in the City Council if elected. “I want to focus on health and education which I consider very critical to our recovery,” he said.

Mayo said he was a former Sangguniang Kabataan chairman of Brgy. 22, a scholar, an employee and now a lawyer. He passed the BAR Exams in 2019, while working as Gasataya’s technical staff.

He is the son of a balut, banana que and arroz caldo vendor. His father was also a security guard, barangay tanod, trisikad driver and garbage collector before he became barangay captain of Barangay 22, he added.

Lawyer Eduardo Padios filed his certificate of candidacy (COC) as councilor of Bacolod City under Partido Pederal ng Maharlika before the Commission on Elections- Bacolod Satellite Office Sunday.

The first to file his COC Friday was businessman Alan Arroyo of Brgy. Sum-ag, Bacolod City.

Padios said that as a lawyer he understands the nature of legislation.

If elected, he said he will focus on pushing the establishment of a city hospital, and will also push for providing free housing constructions via the City Engineers Office for informal settlers in private properties who are facing demolition.

He will also push for the increase of public teachers allowances and financial subsidies for pupils, students enrolled in public schools, as well as the institutionalization of job order casual employees of the city.

Padios said he would be a good cooperator for executive actions if these are beneficial to the general public

But he would be a strongest voice in the city if he sees anomalous transactions of the executives.

He would be representing the poor sector of the society, he said.

Padios said he is against the privatization of Central Negros Electric Cooperative. He also gives free legal advice in several radio stations like RMN and Bandera, he added.*
