Cases of leptospirosis in highly urbanized Bacolod City are up 200 percent from March 29 to April 4, with three probable deaths, according to reports of the City Health Office.
CHO recorded 12 cases of leptospirosis from March 29 to April 4, compared to four cases, with one death, in the same period last year.
Two cases were recorded in Barangay Estefania, and one each in Mandalagan, Sum-ag, Taculing, Singcang, Felisa, Banago, 10, 13, 16, and 39, all in Bacolod City.
Leptospirosis is a disease caused by the bacterium Leptospira that can be found in contaminated water or soil.
Without treatment, leptospirosis in people can lead to kidney damage, meningitis (inflammation of the membrane around the brain and spinal cord), liver failure, trouble breathing, and even death, according to the Department of Health.
On the other hand, CHO recorded a reduction by 54 percent of dengue cases in the same period.
Dengue cases dropped from 292 cases and two deaths in 2025, to 134 cases with zero deaths, this year.
Barangay Singcang topped the 61 villages in Bacolod with the most dengue cases at 20.*
