Cases of leptospirosis have increased by 200 percent in Bacolod City, as of August 26, compared to the same period last year.
Records of the Bacolod City Health Office (CHO) showed that the number of cases of leptospirosis is 66 as of August 26, with 12 deaths, or an increase of three deaths compared to nine deaths as of August 12.
Out of the 12 fatalities, only one was female, from Brgy. 14. The rest were males coming from Brgys. Taculing, Banago, Handumanan, Villamonte, Bata, Pahanocoy, Granada, Singcang, Tangub, Brgy 6, and Brgy. 14.
CHO reported that some were exposed to flood/drainage water, and others were due to contaminated water. The most common reason for complications and death are health seeking behavior, or denial of leptospirosis exposure.*
