Twinkling with Ninfa R. Leonardia

Shortly after lunch yesterday, I turned on the TV and immediately saw flashed on the screen “Bacolod mayor fully vaccinated”. This was repeated at least four times, and I got wondering, why, aren’t the other mayors getting vaccinated? I do know some people who still have reservations about getting “shot”, but really, I cannot understand why. Are they afraid the needles might be infected, or that the injection itself may infect  them? By the way, it was not a local TV, it was ANC.

I hope more information will be provided to our citizens about the benefits of the “shots”, because it will be another story if they have already gotten the symptoms of this disease before they submit to it. Me, I have always had a healthy respect for vaccines even as a child, and doctors and nurses would come to our school for the annual vaccinations. But my father never liked the idea of us getting “shots” in school, he would rather attend to it through doctors he knew.

As if we are not being scared enough by this pandemic, here comes news that Taal Volcano is acting up, and residents near it have been advised to evacuate. Also, we  had news recently about the crash of a military plane in which the original reports said 39 were injured. Later the number increased to 50. These are very fearful times, indeed, and I am glad that  classes are not yet opening because it could be dangerous for children. I hope parents will be willing to give some time to tutoring their children, not only to help in their education, but also to keep them out of mischief.

A report from the United Nations yesterday predicted that millions may experience  famine in the next few months. Seems there are already some countries undergoing it, and how can the United Nations help them? Ironically, the same newscast announced the holding of a hotdog eating contest in the U.S. I forgot to note down what state or city it had taken place in, but I can imagine a lot of hotdog being wasted by losers who did not care to finish them! I also don’t remember  whether the hotdog was wrapped in a bun. But I’m sure the losers did not bother to finish their “dogs”. I still remember one of our teachers, a nun at LCC, who admonished us everytime we left uneaten food on our plates, “Remember the starving children in India”. Are there starving children there until now? I am afraid we have some in our country nowadays, too.

By the way, I also heard a report from some medicine people that cases of high blood pressure have been soaring in our country lately. I guess that is not surprising, considering the raging pandemic  that does not give warning of its attacks. Where before people got high blood when they get mad or have big problems, now all they have to do is  listen to the reports on the progress of the COVID to feel their blood pressure soar. But they can calm themselves down by thinking of all those other countries with higher mortalities, to relax.

Again, news has come out about the efficacy of the plant called “Lagundi” in  treating this COVID ailment. But I remember hearing about this shortly after the COVID struck  and spread its virus to many parts of our country, as well as in the entire world. Have our medical people tried looking into this plant and testing its efficacy? I have heard about lagundi, but I don’t think I have seen it, or maybe just did not recognize it. So why don’t our folks give it a try? However, with our city now actively taking care of the vaccination of our people, I am hopeful that this COVID will soon go away for lack of victims to pounce on!

But you have to give it to the Americans,  COVID or no COVID, they still can’t be stopped from celebrating their Fourth of July. So, at least we have the vicarious  pleasure of watching their fireworks on TV, and pretend we, too, are celebrating , since we did not have any noisemakers on our own Independence Day, June 12. For me, one of the things that I could call a saving grace during these pandemic and quarantine days, is having a dear friend, Edouard Garcia whom to talk to and make plans  now and then, although I also sympathize with him for missing his friends in Paris after being stranded here by Mr. COVID. But Paris’s loss is our gain, dear Edouard!

Maybe the Vatican did keep it under wraps, that is, did not reveal to the media that our Holy Father Pope Francis, had been ailing and had, in fact, gone through surgery. But of course Our Lord must have been looking down and watching over him, so now he has been declared recovered, and let us, as his faithful children in the Church, give thanks for his recovery. I heard he had been suffering from a colon problem but thank God, he is fully recovered now. Let us offer prayers in thanksgiving for our Holy Father’s recovery.*
