Mall heist getaway car owner identified

• GILBERT P. BAYORAN

The owner of the white Mitsubishi Montero used as a getaway vehicle by the five suspects in the recent ransacking of Gaisano Capital in San Carlos City, Negros Occidental, has already been identified, after coordination with the Land Transportation Office, according to the police.

In a statement, PL. Col. Nazer Canja, San Carlos City police chief, said the information could help in their ongoing investigation.

The police investigation indicated that prior to the incident, the group of the suspects rented a cottage at the Pondside Cottage Inn in Barangay Macapso, Vallehermoso, Negros Oriental.

Canja said that a staff of the inn was able to take a picture of the vehicle, and recognized the suspects, who were overheard to have been speaking neither Cebuano nor Hiligaynon.

The bonnet-wearing suspects took about P1.4 million in cash, jewelry and tools from the Grace Pharmacy, Galleon Enterprise, Yung Luck Star Jewelry, and Handyman, on August 19.

Thieves tunneled their way inside Gaisano Capital, from a drainage system, according to the police.

Canja disclosed that the two burglars were assisted by three other suspects, who were staying at the getaway vehicle.*
